Why It Matters: Somaliland Celebrates 25 Years of Independence
From the capital city of Hargeisa to the global diaspora, today Somalilanders around the world are celebrating 25 years of independence. But despite their remarkable achievements in peace, stability and democracy in a volatile region, Somaliland is not recognized internationally. This reduces Somaliland’s ability to work with the international community to find solutions to international issues like terrorism, piracy and migration. More than a half a million citizens of Somaliland have signed a petition urging the world to reconsider this injustice and recognize their country – a call reinforced by Somaliland President Ahmed Silanyo in a letter delivered to UK Prime Minister David Cameron today.
