Tribal Chieftains The elephant in The room of Somaliland politics. In the cultural Somaliland tribal coexistence there was a noble role for the tribal chieftains. They were a symbol of dignity and a source of wisdom and self esteem. Each and every one of them was a role model in upholding the cultural values that their fellow men and women prided themselves with. In the era of the military dictatorship the prevailing political doctrines of socialism and communism turned their sacred roles into controlled tools to cascade the ruling party policies of divide and rule. Those of them who resisted that policy were either eliminated or jailed. The deceitful policy of anti-tribalism also erased their role apart from fulfilling the system policies that divided the community into bite sizes of the rulers choice. After the collapse of the military system the tribal chieftains re-emerged but this time with totally different job description. They turned themselves into political brokers and kingmakers. The contemporary democratic system of governance was pinched with a grain of tribal racketeering. The neighborly tribes were coerced against each other to uphold the wicked roles of the cheifs. Without a meaningful separation of democracy and tribalism as the system of governance Somaliland is headed for a dire consequence.
